If you’re a homeschooler, you must be a rebel.  Here’s why:

  • You have taken the responsibility for your child’s education out of the hands of government and into your own.
  • You are going against the mainstream and creating a minority status for your family.
  • You are doing all this with very little, if any, support, guidance or encouragement.
  • You are still paying for public education through taxes and paying all the costs for homeschooling, out of pocket, while very likely surviving on one income.

In many countries throughout the world homeschooling is illegal and public education is mandatory.  In other countries in which homeschooling is legal, there are often restrictions requiring families to mimic public education at home or subjecting them to home inspections.

Even in the countries where homeschooling is legal we are still the minority.  In the U.K. about 4% of children are homeschooled while in the U.S. 3%, and Canada about 2%.  There are still restrictions but families can find many ways to match a program with their child’s needs.

But just because it’s legal, doesn’t mean it’s easy.   Homeschoolers face many social and financial challenges.   It truly takes a rebel to homeschool.   Let’s honor that inner rebel and offer support and ways to nurture families so we can not only continue our upward battle, but thrive while doing so.
